Rex Calloway made hit records in two cramped rooms above a music shop off Tin Pan Alley, and he made enemies at about the same rate. On a wet Tuesday in October his night session with the Silhouettes broke for the pub at a quarter past ten. At ten past eleven the caretaker heard Rex's voice boom down the stairwell, calling for one more take. At twenty to midnight the band came back and found him dead on the live-room floor, his hands burnt and the room in darkness. Five people had reason to want the music to stop.
